On Sunday, a group of us explored Le Centre Pompidou - Metz, a new modern art museum (not to be confused with the original Centre Pompidou in Paris!). The museum was very interesting, but one of my favorite features was the architecture. The building’s sweeping arcs and geometric patterns stand out in what is otherwise a very traditional, historic European city. Traveling with a group of engineers led to a more detailed analysis of the structure than I expected on a museum trip, and we all marveled at the precise technique and skill it must have taken to construct the building, especially all the curved wooden beams.

Within the museum, my favorite exhibit was of architectural models of French buildings. The most impressive was Le Fondation Louis Vuitton, built in Paris in 2006.

Another favorite was “Le Magasin de Ben,” a 3-D piece inspired by a real shop/artist’s meeting place in Nice by Benjamin Vautier.
