Yesterday, photographer Tomas Ovalle came to Hospital La Trinidad with his nephew Chris to conduct a photo/videoshoot for the upcoming EWH promotional video. The morning was predictable - he just shot pictures of us working on a NIBP. Pretty standard (until he asked Dinachi to pose with her eyes peeking over the top of the circuit board, at which point things started to feel like ANTM. And apparently Dinachi is very good at “finding the light”).
In the afternoon, the situation became a bit more “entertaining.” Aka me standing next to Jose, a 70-year-old patient, talking about how good it felt to fix equipment while he used a nebulizer. I felt awkward at first, but after at least 10 takes I finally got the hang of it. Talking into the camera is harder than it looks! Then we continued the photoshoot with shots of us talking with the director, the nurses, and finding equipment. For the most part, the day was meeting my expectations.
That all changed when Tomas exclaimed “lets get some pictures of you girls holding the chickens outside your house!” At that point, the EWH photoshoot turned into a “Little House on the Prairie” photoshoot of Dinachi and me feeding the chickens, posing in the backyard, and then… holding the birds. It was scary at first, but then I have to admit it was pretty cool! He kept urging us to bring the birds closer to our bodies and faces, which was kind of scary, especially when the birds tried to move around. But I can now officially say I’ve had a photoshoot with a bird. Not exactly resume-worthy, but still pretty cool. My favorite shot was the last one - Tomas had us throw the birds in the air and got an incredible picture of the birds flying away in front of us. I have a huge smile on my face. Meanwhile, Dinachi seems terrified. Classic.

Me holding my new ‘“friend.” Feels like something out of a Disney movie.
