This weekend Dinachi and I met up with some of the girls on the program in Masaya, a city famous for its markets and flowers. Well… its called the “city of flowers,” but to be honest we didn’t see too many flowers anywhere! But there were certainly tons of markets, so we spent the day exploring them and looking for the perfect gifts for all our loved ones.
The markets were certainly interesting, but I am disappointed to report that it was difficult to find appropriate gifts for everyone. I started uploading photos but then decided it might make for a tasteless post. So let the descriptions suffice: the markets were filled obscene paintings of women, sculptures of toilets, mugs in the shape of a breast, paintings of people sitting on the toilet, etc. Not what I was expecting from a town called the city of flowers!
In this case, the best gift might be no gift at all.
After our shopping adventures, we ventured to Diriamba, where we spent the night in Grace and Laamia’s gorgeous home. It easily could be one of the nicest homes in Nicaragua, as evidenced by the photo! It was such a nice change of pace to spend an evening in a home with a Nicaraguan family, and to be met in the morning with a delicious hot breakfast and homemade cappuccinos! But the best part of the weekend was just lying around with all the girls, listening to music, sharing stories, and looking at pictures from the trip and from our lives back at home. We spent at least an hour staring at pictures of Duke! The chapel, the gardens… everything about that place is just magical and I can’t wait to go back.

Beautiful Duke. I can’t wait to walk down this pathway again and make a stop in the Refectory for pumpkin chocolate chip bread before walking to a lecture in the E-Quad.

The gardens. Just perfect.
